Blues-A-Thon: A Yearly Fundraiser

What is a Blues-A-Thon?

The Blues-A-Thon is a 24 hour, nonstop blues jam, which features Uptown Music Collective students jamming alongside the schools teachers and staff, as well as area amateur and professional musicians. The Blues-A-Thon is also a joyous celebration of the uniquely American musical form known as the Blues. A highly anticipated annual event, the Blues-A-Thon involves more then 70 performers letting the music roll all night long in an effort to raise money to support the Uptown Music Collective, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit school of music.

Modeled after events like Relay for Life, Blues-A-Thon participants pledge to perform a certain number of hours during the 24 hour event, and then seek individuals and businesses to sponsor them for each hour of music performed. All proceeds from the event go directly to the schools general fund, which is used to support the schools educational programs and administrative needs.

Blues-A-Thon 2010
The Uptown Music Collective Blues-A-Thon 2010 was held on the front lawn of the Uptown Music Collective during the daylight hours and inside the schools main building during the overnight. The event featured Blues performer Tas Cru, sponsored by the Billtown Blues Association, who opened and closed the event and appeared with both students, teachers and area musicians throughout the 24 hour marathon. Tas was a force of nature showing up at midnight to play for an hour with students and back again early in the morning and throughout the afternoon. The students were inspired not only by his performance but by his giving nature as he worked with students throughout.

The event was open to the public throughout and was also simultaneously live-streamed to the internet (check it out at: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/8924413 . Although the funds raised through this years event were lower then the first years event, students learned about the blues and every little bit of money helps, so the staff was very pleased with the outcome.

The First Blues-A-Thon (2009)
The first Blues-A-Thon was held at Site: B, a facility in the Pajama Factory that the Uptown Music Collective used for it's drum lessons, rehearsals and as a all ages music club from 2008, through the spring of 2010. Over 70 students, teachers and community musicians, both professional and amateur joined together to make the first event a great success, ultimately raising over $4000.
