Full Enrollment Program

The Full Enrollment Program is everything that I dreamed of being involved in as a young teenage guitarist. Finding an experienced teacher, who could show me the key techniques of the instrument, as well as its popular songs and styles, would have been pretty cool. But having the opportunity to study with just such a teacher and at the same time study music theory in weekly classes, and get involved in workshops and performances alongside other kids my own age would have been incredible. Students in the Uptown Music Collective’s Full Enrollment Program do just that every week.

Our Full Enrollment students take a private lesson, two workshops and a class each week. In their private lessons, which can be a half hour or hour long, they learn the technique of their instrument, the basic materials needed to make music, like chords and scales, as well as common styles and songs. In their classes, which start with basic music theory, they learn to read and write music, compose, arrange music for other instruments and to understand music’s inner workings. In their weekly workshops all of the elements are brought together and the students learn to make music together with other kids of their same level.
It’s this controlled combination of each of the important elements of music education that makes this program so effective. Instead of trying to cram all of the student’s music education into one half hour lesson, the information is spread out into classes and workshops taught by different teachers which ultimately give these students a broader and better understanding of music. Through the constant reinforcement in each of the students school activities they learn faster and go further then most students or parents would ever expect.

The Accelerated Music / Mentoring Program (AMMP)

AMMP is a new Uptown Music Collective program intended to raise the educational bar for the school’s most highly motivated and talented students. With this program, the students who demonstrate a gift for music and the self discipline to develop it will be invited to take part in an accelerated curriculum in their private lessons, classes and workshops that includes all aspects of music theory, composition, arranging, ear training, etc. In addition each student will have the opportunity to study directly with area music professionals through the program’s unique community mentoring piece.

Traditionally, young musicians, as part of their training, would go to jam sessions or join a band with older musicians where they would be taught the etiquette, technique and craft of music by a variety of experienced tutors. Through this process the musical village would raise the young musician. Today these traditions have faded and young musicians are often left to figure things out on their own.

In addition to the accelerated instrumental and class curriculum, students will also be assigned the task of meeting and studying different aspects of music and the music business with community mentors. These community mentors will be handpicked and will consist of area musicians/educators, business people and technicians, who will share their experience, knowledge and love of music with each of the students.

To be considered for the Uptown Music Collective’s Accelerated Music and Mentoring Program students must have achieved the following:

  • Certificate of Musicianship or equivalent
  • Excelled in performance at a recital, UMC performance or other.
  • Demonstrated a good attitude
  • Demonstrated a strong desire to learn music

The teachers and staff are always on the lookout for exceptional students who possess the above characteristics and have accomplished the necessary criteria. If you would like to be considered for AMMP contact Dave Brumbaugh to review your status and to audition for entrance.
