Guitar Instruction

uptown music collective guitar instruction

The Uptown Music Collective guitar curriculum was created by current Executive Director and guitar instructor Dave Brumbaugh. A devoted student of the guitar since his early teens, Dave is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston’s world-renowned Berklee College of Music and a professional guitarist and music instructor with over thirty years of experience. The guitar curriculum taught at the Uptown Music Collective is the culmination of years of study in multiple styles and includes techniques from all of the major fields of guitar endeavor.

Based securely in listening and developing a keen musical ear, Dave’s curriculum is a multi-genre approach to teaching both technique and musicality.  With an emphasis on teaching not just the principles of the guitar but aiding the student in developing the tools of musical thinking, the UMC curriculum aims to produce guitar-players that don’t fall into the typical guitarist traps, but rather transcend their instrument to become sensitive, capable musicians comfortable creating music in a variety of idioms and styles. This heavy goal is accomplished by emphasizing mindfulness, discipline, and focus while studying a broad selection of musical styles with the objective of achieving mastery in practice and performance.

At the Uptown Music Collective, we seek to push our guitar students toward a deep understanding of their instrument and of the art of musicianship.  In this detailed course of study, student guitarists develop the confidence to evolve independently as players and a deep, life-long respect for the power and potential of music.
